Interior doors can be both practical and stylish; they help bring a room to life and can be a big influence on the room’s design choice and bring everything together. There are different factors in choosing the right door for each room: different sizes, how much clearance space, single or double doors, and the current architectural design. Listed below are 5 different types of doors to choose from.

Barn Doors

Always a trendy option, barn doors are a great alternative to the traditional door style without the need for clearance to swing open. These doors are mounted from above on rollers and slide open similar to sliding doors. There are some factors to consider when choosing a barn door:

  • There needs to be the same amount of space available equal to the width of the door when it slides open
  • Unlike a traditional door, there is no hinges or door handle, so there is no proper seal between the door and the wall
  • Because they are mounted directly on the wall, consider the total weight of the door and metal frame. Make sure there’s enough studs to hold everything in place securely.

Pocket Doors

Similar to barn doors, pocket doors slide open, but the door itself rolls into a pocket between the walls. Different design options could include choosing between single or double doors, and solid material or glass panes. These would be a great option for smaller spaces such as a laundry room, bathroom, pantry, or closets.

Dutch Doors

These are an old classic style but still very practical in a modern home. Dutch doors look like a traditional door, but can split in half horizontally. These are great for their functional use of being able to allow fresh air in by opening the top portion, and keeping the bottom half locked. Consider these in a kitchen, mudrooms, or even play areas where keeping small children or pets safe while allowing some level of openness to the neighboring room.

Arch Doors

Arch doors are a beautiful and elegant take on the classic door that provides a sophisticated and custom look. These can come in multiple different sizes and styles; single or double doors, classic, french or industrial styled, and swing open or pocket opening. Arch doors are great for any room in the house, and also helps to create a focal point by accentuating whatever furniture or decoration piece is placed in the other room.

Hidden Doors

These have started to become more popular lately with its fantasy concept of a secret passageway into another room. These can be easily done by stylizing a door to look like the rest of the room; some examples could include a disguised (and still functional) bookshelf, fake pantry doors, or even a full-length mirror.
